Display Energy Certificate Can't Post

Hi All,

As you may know the DCLG have stated that from 1st October 2008 all public buildings must display a DEC - Display Energy Certificate, this is somewhat different from the domestic EPC, a first glimpse of what it looks like and the dates for implementation and the buildings affected can be seen at:

Display Energy Certificates - DEC

This type of certificate can only be issued by a commercial energy assessor for existing buildings.

Re: [Chris] Display Energy Certificate [In reply to] Can't Post

Are there are DEA's out there who have worked for any Panels and have comments whether the Panels are good for DEA's or the fee chargeable/ payable for an EPC?

I'd love to have your views to make a comparison as to the likely state of the Non DEA market place, having already been contacted by such a panel.

My own personal opinion, is they are absolutely no good to the industry. This is based in seeing first hand what happened in the personal local search industry where the advent of panels has slashed the price of a personal search by more than 70% (over £100 to £38 in some cases) causing hardship to agents who have been in business for over 20 years. Then since the introduction of HIPS - by the combination of endless training courses offering endless earnings, and over capacity of assessors again slash the price from £140 in August to £35 just 9 months later,I feel thay are not good for the industry.

I'd like to know your views. Have they helped your buisness? could you have done better or worse without whichever panel you worked for? Would you have not survived without them; Were their terms & conditions fair; did they offer good money for value (that's correct).

I'm fearful they will do the same for the ndea market too. Please let me have your views on this - thanks.

Re: [cardiffenergy] Display Energy Certificate [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello,

A valid observation of the state of the market. I personally am registered on 3 panels since 2007 and have yet to receive an instruction. There's no doubt that training providers have cashed in on individual's looking for a new career. If people knew of the number od DEA's already trained then many I suspect would not bother.

I know that the take up for commercial energy assessors has been slow, probably due to the fact that those already trained as DEA's do not wish to get their fingers burned again.

I suspect that RICS surveyors will concentrate on this sector of the market, overall I think that the commercial buildings sector will prove more lucrative, but for how long?

As for CEA panels I know of at least one setting up in the North West area, lets hope it doesn't develop into a similar cut throat operation as witnessed by many in the domestic sector to date.

Regards
Chris
